PREVIEW: DiRT 3

dirt 3

Last weekend the DBR team were graciously invited ‘daaann laaaaandannn’ to get hands on with Codemaster’s DiRT 3. What happened next was nothing short of a rally spectacle.

On arrival at Battersea power station we were ushered into a building already jam packed full of people getting hands on with DiRT 3, fearing the dreaded ‘is it my go yet?’ syndrome I headed outside to the Monster tour bus where we could get a nice view of the powerstation and surrounding area which had been transformed in such a manner that showcases DiRT 3’s biggest addition, Gymkhana; a free-form open area full of tight bends, a jackknifed lorry and many many cardboard boxes.

Gymkhana you say??? TO DBR I GO!

FEATURE: Why Fanboy?

console_wars image
For as long as I can remember I’ve played video games, from my James Bond custom ZX Spectrum back in 1987 up until today’s consoles I’ve always had computer games in my life.

Many variables have changed during my 26 year existence; graphics have improved into full 3D, motion control gaming has become more of  a gimmick rather than a huge leap of technology, and video games now command more revenue than some blockbuster films. I’ve watched as huge industry giants go from being one of the top console manufactures to fall so far they’ve ended up releasing mainly subpar games on their once fierce business rival’s platform. Throughout this one thing has always remained a constant… Fanboys.

YES YES YES RYAN THOSE NOB FANBOYS NOBBING ANNOY ME. I WILL READ MORE ON DEATHBYROBOTS

NEWS: New Max Payne 3 Images

max_payne_3 copyRockstar games have just tweeted two new screens of Max Payne 3 with the ominous tag line ‘He’s coming’.

Max Payne 3 was originally revealed back in early 2009, with plans to release that winter. While the rest of us game noir fans licked our lips in preparation the winter came and went, with little or no mention of our aforementioned psycho hero. That is until the summer of 2010, when Take-Two announced it would be delaying the game indefinitely. Its been pretty quite since then until six hours ago when Rockstar dropped these two nice little dittys on us.

REVIEW: Crysis 2 (Single Player)

crysis 2 reviewCrysis 2 is Crytek’s intense action-packed graphically jacked-up FPS set in the year 2023, three years after the events after the original Crysis.

The world has been shaken by a series of viral, natural and economic disasters that has left most major cities in total ruins. You play as a marine named Alcatraz, the sole survivor of his team after the rest of his unit were killed during a kidnap mission. He is left stranded in a evacuated (bar a few very infected civilians) New York City. Alcatraz is promptly  thrown head first into the middle of a destructive war between the privately owned militants C.E.L.L. and a deadly alien force named the Ceph.

As FPSs go these days there really isn’t that much that hasn’t been done ten times over, so aside from the jaw droppingly gorgeous graphics and the horribly average multiplayer demo that came out last month I was initially a wee bit sceptical about what Crytek was going to offer me with Crysis 2’s single player mode.

FEATURE: Are Graphics Really That Important?

graphics matter
In the times of high-end LCD TVs, thousand core PCs and handheld consoles with the ability to display 3D without glasses you can’t help but wonder if us gamers are a little bit spoilt for choice on what we feed our eyes? With that perhaps we’ve become a little bit too complacent with how our games look and invest a little too much time nit-picking things that in the grand scheme of things really don’t matter.

I’m not saying we’re all heathens who should play shitty low-res games. I’m trying to say that us gamers on a whole spend a little bit too much time slagging off a games graphics before emotionally investing in a story or gameplay element, while more casual gamers join in by simply being attracted to the shiniest thing in the room.

INTERVIEW: Benn Friedrich – Creator of ‘Chester’

chesterBox banner
Benn Friedrich heads up Brilliant Blue-G, an independent video games studio with a workforce of one. That’s right, he’s the sole writer, animator, coder and sandwich-maker of the upcoming XBLA/Steam game Chester and he doesn’t seem to be half bad at any of those jobs

The video below surfaced about a month or so ago, and ever since us Robopals at DBR have felt suitably inclined to be a tad bit giddy. So we figured we’d track the guy responsible for the game down and have a nice chat over some tea and biscuits.
